Pediatric Chiropractic in McKinney: A Parent’s Guide for Kids and Teens
By Dr. Aanchal, Webster-certified chiropractor at Tula Chiropractic & Wellness, McKinney, TX
Pediatric chiropractic is gentle, age-appropriate chiropractic care for children, from toddlers to teens. Kids' bodies change fast, and everyday things like learning to walk, falls, sports, heavy backpacks and screens all put stress on a growing spine. At Tula Chiropractic in McKinney, we help kids with posture, growing pains, sports strain and headaches, and we support their overall comfort and sleep, always alongside your pediatrician.
This guide answers the questions parents ask us most about chiropractic for kids.
Is chiropractic safe for children?
Parents ask this more than anything else, and it's a great question. Adjustments for children are gentle, specific and adapted to their age and size. They are nothing like adult adjustments. The ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association), which trains chiropractors in pediatric care, emphasizes age-appropriate techniques with minimal pressure. For little ones, that's often no more than you'd use to check the ripeness of a tomato.
Many kids find visits fun and relaxing. We've built a kid-friendly, welcoming space where children feel comfortable and parents feel confident.
Why do parents bring kids to a chiropractor?
The most common reasons parents bring children to Tula include:
Posture changes from backpacks, studying and screen time
Growing pains and muscle or joint tension during growth spurts
Sports strain and recovery during busy seasons
Headaches and neck or back pain
Sleep challenges and restlessness
Recovery after falls and the everyday bumps of being a kid
Babies with feeding, colic or head tilt concerns (see our baby chiropractic guide)
How does chiropractic help kids as they grow?
Kids grow fast, and their bodies are constantly adapting. Gentle care can:
Ease growing pains by reducing joint and muscle tension during growth spurts
Improve posture and help counter the effects of backpacks, sports and screens
Support comfortable movement so kids can play, run and focus
Support better rest. Parents often notice their kids are calmer and sleep better after care.
When should my child come in?
Consider a visit:
After birth, especially a long or difficult delivery
During or after sports seasons
If your child complains of headaches or back pain
If their posture looks uneven, such as one shoulder higher than the other
After a fall or minor injury, once your pediatrician has ruled out anything serious
Can chiropractic help with ear infections?
Ear infections are one of the most common reasons children visit the pediatrician. In young children, the Eustachian tubes that drain the middle ear are shorter and more horizontal, so fluid can have a harder time draining.
Chiropractic care does not treat ear infections, and it isn't a substitute for your pediatrician. Ear pain with fever, discharge from the ear, or a child who seems very unwell needs medical care.
Many families do choose gentle chiropractic as complementary support. The ICPA notes that gentle adjustments support spinal and nervous system function, and our care focuses on releasing tension in the neck and upper back and supporting your child's overall comfort. Parents often tell us their children are more comfortable and sleep better with regular care. We'll always tell you if something should be checked by your pediatrician.
Does chiropractic help with immune health during sick season?
Cold and flu season hits hard, especially for families with little ones. Chiropractic doesn't treat illness. Our focus is on supporting your child's nervous system and comfort and reducing physical stress so their body can rest and recover.
Healthy habits matter just as much: sleep, nourishing food, time outside, handwashing, and keeping up with your pediatrician's recommendations. If your child is sick with a fever, keep them home and check with your pediatrician.
What about teens with headaches?
Teens juggle school, sports and a lot of screen time, and many struggle with headaches. We cover this in detail in our headaches, stress and sleep guide.
How can I support my child's posture and comfort at home?
A few simple habits go a long way between visits:
Backpacks: Use both straps, keep the bag snug against the back, and pack heavier books closest to the spine. A backpack that hangs low or rides on one shoulder pulls posture out of balance.
Screens: Raise tablets and laptops closer to eye level, and build in movement breaks. Long stretches looking down load the neck and upper back.
Movement: Unstructured play, climbing, crawling for little ones, and a mix of sports all help kids build balanced strength. Kids who play one sport year-round benefit from cross-training and rest.
Sleep: A consistent bedtime routine and a supportive pillow that keeps the neck in line with the spine help growing bodies recover.
Hydration and stretching: Especially during sports seasons and growth spurts, when muscles can feel tight.
If your child mentions the same pain more than once, or you notice they're favoring one side, it's worth having it checked.
What happens at a pediatric visit?
A conversation with you (and your child, when they're old enough) about health history, activities and concerns
A gentle, hands-on check of posture, movement and comfort
Age-appropriate adjustments and soft tissue work
Simple tips for posture, backpacks, screens, sleep and stretching
Visits run 30–45 minutes. Parents are welcome to stay with their child for the whole visit. Learn more on our pediatric chiropractic page and our family chiropractic page.
What if my child is nervous about their first visit?
That's completely normal. We go at your child's pace, explain what we're doing in kid-friendly language, and never force anything. Little ones can sit on your lap, and older kids are welcome to ask as many questions as they like. Many kids who are nervous the first time end up looking forward to coming back.
