Postpartum Recovery and the Fourth Trimester: How Chiropractic Supports Moms After Vaginal Birth or C-Section
By Dr. Aanchal, Webster-certified chiropractor at Tula Chiropractic & Wellness, McKinney, TX
Postpartum chiropractic care helps your body recover from pregnancy and birth. It focuses on restoring pelvic and spinal balance, easing the neck, shoulder and back strain of feeding and carrying a newborn, and helping your nervous system settle. At Tula Chiropractic in McKinney, we see moms after every kind of birth, including vaginal births and C-sections, and you don't have to wait for your six-week clearance to come in.
Birth is not the finish line. This guide covers what your body goes through in the fourth trimester and how we support you through it.
What is the fourth trimester?
The "fourth trimester" is the first 12 weeks or so after birth. It's a major healing season. Your body is recovering from pregnancy and delivery while you feed, carry, rock and care for a newborn on very little sleep. Yet many moms go home with little support beyond a single six-week checkup.
Many moms also feel pressure to "bounce back" quickly. The truth is that your body needs intentional care to heal, rebuild and regulate.
Why does my body still feel off after birth?
Pregnancy changes your body in profound ways, and those changes don't reverse the day your baby arrives:
Your ligaments stay looser for a while. Pregnancy hormones like relaxin keep joints more flexible after birth, so the pelvis and low back can feel unstable.
Your pelvic alignment may shift during pregnancy and delivery.
Feeding and carrying add new strain. Hours of nursing, bottle feeding, baby-wearing and lifting a car seat load your neck, shoulders, upper back and wrists.
Your nervous system is working overtime. Sleep deprivation and the demands of a newborn keep your body in a high-alert state.
Without support, this can show up as:
Persistent pelvic or low back pain
Core and pelvic floor weakness or discomfort
Neck, shoulder and upper back tension from feeding posture
Headaches and fatigue
A lot of postpartum moms describe feeling "off" in a way that's hard to name. That feeling is real, and it's your body asking for attention.
How does chiropractic care help new moms?
At Tula, postpartum visits are full-body sessions. We focus on:
Pelvic realignment. Gentle adjustments help restore balance in the pelvis and sacrum, easing discomfort and supporting your recovery.
Upper body relief. Soft tissue work and adjustments ease the neck, shoulder, upper back and wrist strain from feeding and holding your baby.
Nervous system regulation. Gentle care helps calm an overloaded nervous system, which many moms find helps with stress and rest.
Core and pelvic floor awareness. We look at how your core and pelvis are working together and refer you to a pelvic floor physical therapist when that's the right next step.
How soon after birth can I see a chiropractor?
You don't have to wait until your six-week clearance. Many moms come in much sooner, and we meet you exactly where you are. Your care is adjusted to how you delivered, how you're healing and what feels comfortable. If you had complications, let us know and check in with your OB or midwife.
Can chiropractic help after a C-section?
Yes. Many moms assume chiropractic care is only for vaginal births, but a C-section is major abdominal surgery, and it creates its own recovery work. After a C-section, we gently support:
Scar tissue awareness and abdominal recovery, working around the incision area only once it has healed and you're comfortable
Back pain from surgical recovery, guarding and nursing positions
Pelvic balance, because your pelvis still carried a full pregnancy even if you didn't deliver vaginally
Whether your birth was planned or unexpected, your body deserves care.
Can my baby be checked too after a C-section?
Yes. A C-section is a different journey for your baby too. Some C-section babies show tension in the neck or have trouble feeding comfortably on both sides. Our gentle pediatric care can check how your baby is moving and support feeding and settling. Many moms book a visit for themselves and their baby together. Read more in our baby chiropractic guide.
When should I call my doctor instead?
Chiropractic care supports your recovery, but it isn't a replacement for your OB, midwife or primary care provider. Call them right away for heavy bleeding, fever, a C-section incision that is red, warm, swollen or leaking, severe headaches, calf pain or swelling in one leg, chest pain or trouble breathing. Reach out to your provider too if you're feeling persistently down, anxious or unlike yourself. Postpartum mood changes are common and treatable, and you deserve support for your mind as well as your body.
What can I do at home to protect my back while caring for a newborn?
Small changes in how you sit, feed and carry your baby can protect your spine and support recovery:
Bring your baby to you, not you to your baby. Use pillows to raise your baby to breast or bottle height instead of hunching forward.
Switch sides when you carry, feed and burp.
Support your back with a pillow behind you when you sit to feed.
Lift with your legs when picking up the car seat or your baby from the crib.
Rest when you can, and accept help.
We'll also talk with you about movement, feeding challenges and tips for your baby during your visits.
What happens at a postpartum visit at Tula?
